Xenia Spider Infestation — Identifying the Risk Level
The majority of spiders found in US homes are harmless. However, Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders — both present across much of the US — deliver medically significant bites. Properties with high spider populations also indicate an underlying insect population sustaining them.
In Xenia, spider populations tend to be highest in undisturbed areas — garages, basements, crawlspaces, storage areas, and exterior perimeter zones with dense vegetation or debris.
Recognising Black Widow and Brown Recluse Spiders
Black Widow identification: shiny black body, round abdomen, red hourglass marking visible on the underside. Typically found in low, dark, sheltered locations. Brown Recluse identification: uniformly light brown with a dark violin shape on the cephalothorax, and six eyes arranged in pairs rather than the standard eight. Found in undisturbed storage areas, between folded clothing, and inside boxes. Neither species should be approached without protective equipment.
